Mike Roche Towpath Plaque

Mike Roche at the 1978 Falmouth Road Race where he finished 2nd (wearing the USA singlet)

Mike Roche trained almost daily on the towpath. In 1976 he made the US Olympic team. His entry in the RU hall of fame is here.

His teammate Larry Erickson recollects the origin of the plaque, “He ran on the tow-path almost every day and one day after being ribbed about it, he found a stick, bent over and wrote Mike Roche Highway; right after the Landing Lane spillway, and the legend began!”

A plaque has been in place on a tree in that area, and club member Chris Lehman noticed that the tree was not looking healthy. Given that several other trees have been cut down in that area recently, he wanted to be sure that the plaque was preserved. It is now located on a nearby healthy tree.

The plaque is on an oak tree close to the tow path and not far from the landing lane spillway.

The “Train”ing Run is a top 10 Northeast marathon

RVRR’s own “Train”ing Run, at the marathon distance has been  named a top 10 marathon in the Northeast by Healthline Media Inc. alongside big names such as the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon.

Healthline Media indicated that their editorial staff made their determinations for the list based on the “uniqueness and beauty of the marathon”. Ray Petit, one of the founders of the Train-ing Run, got in touch with Healthline Media when he heard the news to make sure that they knew it was a non-competitive event. Their response was “Non-competitive is ok.  It’s about the run not the win.”. I don’t think there is anyone who has ever run the Train-ing Run who could possibly disagree with that sentiment.

Congratulations to Ray Petit for his years of work on this event, and thanks to all the volunteers who help make this a great success every year.
